description
The Basiliektoren in Tongeren, Belgium’s oldest city, is a part of the city’s ancient and imposing cathedral which now includes an archaeological site and the Teseum Museum. Our intervention helped prepare for the recent inauguration of the tower, which for the first time allows visitors to enter and experience its rich history and unique views.
The wayfinding system was carefully designed to be integrated with the historic environment while providing clear and efficient guidance. Respecting the tower’s architecture, we developed visually harmonious solutions that minimize interference and preserve the authentic visual experience of the space.
To reflect Belgium’s linguistic diversity, the text is in four languages with Dutch highlighted, followed by French, German and English. This typographic hierarchy ensures accessible and functional communication. Focusing on clarity and simplicity, we chose to minimize text and support it with intuitive graphic elements such as maps, visual coding and pictograms that guide visitors up the tower’s 290 steps.
The signage elements use a neutral chromatic palette that was coordinated with the metallic elements of the new stairs and furniture. At strategic points, orange arrows indicate the route, softening the sense of confinement in the narrowest areas and offering assurance along the way. Circular elements present a welcoming attitude on a journey that, while demanding physical effort, also rewards visitors with an up-close experience of the tower´s bells, their sounds, the gears that set them in motion, and finally with exceptional views of the city and its surroundings.
The wayfinding system not only facilitates visitor circulation, it also fosters an emotional connection with the city’s history and the cathedral tower. It offers accessible and intuitive navigation which respects and enhances the nature of the experience and helps make the visit to Basiliektoren an immersive and unforgettable journey.
